WhatsApp Taking Up Too Much Storage on iPhone? Here's the Fix
WhatsApp keeps every photo, video, voice note and document anyone sends you. In busy group chats, that adds up to gigabytes without you noticing. And by default, it also saves incoming photos to your camera roll, so you pay for them twice.
Check how much space WhatsApp uses
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and find WhatsApp in the list. The number shown includes the app and everything it has stored.
Find the biggest files and chats
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap Settings (bottom right), then Storage and Data.
- Tap Manage Storage.
At the top you'll see files larger than 5 MB and files forwarded many times. Below that is a list of chats sorted by size. Tap a chat, tap Select, choose the files you don't need and delete them. Sorting by Largest inside a chat puts the big videos first.
Stop WhatsApp from filling your photo library
Go to WhatsApp > Settings > Chats and turn off Save to Photos. New media will stay inside WhatsApp instead of also landing in your camera roll.
Already have years of WhatsApp photos in your library? They show up mixed with your own pictures. Many are memes and forwards you never meant to keep. A quick way to find them is to look for near-identical copies, since the same image often gets saved several times from different chats. Our guide on deleting similar photos covers that.
Use disappearing messages for noisy groups
For group chats that only share short-lived content, turn on disappearing messages in the chat's info screen. Media sent there won't pile up.
Don't forget the backup
WhatsApp backs up to iCloud separately. If your iCloud is full, go to WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup and turn off Include Videos.
Then empty Recently Deleted
Photos you delete from the Photos app go to Recently Deleted first. Empty it under Collections > Utilities to get the space back right away.
