How to Cancel a Cleaner App Subscription on iPhone (and Ask for a Refund)
A lot of iPhone cleaner apps work the same way. You download one because your storage is full, it offers a free trial, and three days later you're paying $7 to $10 every week. Deleting the app does not stop the charges. Here's how to actually stop them.
Cancel the subscription
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Find the cleaner app in the list and tap it.
- Tap Cancel Subscription (or Cancel Free Trial) and confirm.
You can also do it from the App Store app: tap your profile picture in the top right, then Subscriptions.
If you don't see the app there, check that you're signed in with the same Apple Account you used to download it. If someone in your Family Sharing group subscribed, it shows on their device, not yours.
Ask Apple for a refund
Apple handles all App Store payments, so refunds go through Apple, not the app's developer.
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account.
- Tap I'd like to and choose Request a refund.
- Pick a reason. "I didn't intend to purchase this" or "Item didn't work as expected" are both common.
- Select the charges you want refunded and submit.
Apple usually replies within 24 to 48 hours. Refunds aren't guaranteed, but requests made soon after a charge are more likely to be approved. If you were charged several weeks in a row without realizing, list each charge.
How to tell a fair app from a trap before you pay
Before you tap anything on a paywall, look for these:
- "/week" next to the price. A weekly price makes a small number look harmless. $7.99 a week is about $415 a year.
- The trial switch is already on. Some paywalls hide the trial terms in small grey text under a big "Continue" button.
- A close button that appears late or is very faint. If it's hard to say no, that tells you something.
- Claims like "boost speed" or "clean junk". iOS doesn't let apps clear other apps' files or System Data. An app that claims to do that is overselling.
What to do about the storage problem
Most of what cleaner apps do, you can do yourself in the Photos app and in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Our guide iPhone Storage Full? What to Delete First goes through it step by step.
If you do want an app to find similar photos and big videos for you, look for one with a one-time price or a fair yearly plan, and one that does the work on your phone. That's why we built Spareroll: there's no weekly plan and no trial that turns into a charge.
Clear space without a subscription trap
Spareroll finds similar shots, old screenshots and oversized videos, all on your iPhone. The free plan cleans 50 items a day. Pro is a single payment.
